Pain To Purpose is the debut EP from The Beautiful Darkness, the UK alternative rock project fronted by songwriter and vocalist Nerys John. Blending fierce riffs, gothic atmosphere and emotionally unfiltered lyricism, the EP captures the journey from heartbreak and jealousy to resilience and reclamation.

Each track explores a different facet of transformation. Victim confronts blame and power dynamics, Tears Fall Down leans into vulnerability, and She—featured by BBC Introducing—channels raw emotion into defiant release. Throughout the EP, sharp-edged guitars and driving rhythms support lyrics that refuse to hide from uncomfortable truths.

At its core, Pain To Purpose is about turning shadow into strength. It speaks to listeners who have faced rejection, self-doubt or betrayal and are ready to reclaim their voice. Dark, direct and fiercely feminine, this release positions The Beautiful Darkness within the new wave of emotionally charged alternative rock.

Work begins on the next EP!

I’m in Birmingham, once again with the mighty Trevor Gibson back on production at Circle Studios.

The focus now is on finding my voice, in a much bigger sense than it was formerly. Where before, it was being able to say what I needed at a personal level, now I’m going for the bigger truths of our existence. I’m addressing what’s happening in the world and sharing my voice on that. My writing perspective is now beyond me and is including the collective.

So, of course, I have a female voice, and that will evidence itself in sound and narrative. I want to be clear that I am willing to dig my heels in where injustice is concerned - and that has certainly shown up in the world in a big way and in many respects, in recent times.

Now is not the time to pipe down. Now is not the time to be small. Now is not the time to be silent. Not when cruelty is becoming so normalised.

We stand together. We stand strong. And we use our voices for good.

That’s what I’m here for. And that’s the centre of the next EP.

I’m stoked to begin working on it today.

Stay tuned for more!

The Vulnerability Of Writing Love Songs

I don’t write love songs very comfortably these days.

The first song I ever wrote was called The Boy of My Dreams. I was six. So it’s not that love songs are unfamiliar to me — they’ve always been there in some form. But now… they don’t quite sit the same.

Experience changes you. It changes what you trust, what you question, what you’re willing to reveal. And after my experiences, it’s left me feeling very reluctant when it comes to writing about love.

And yet — in the studio recently, something shifted.

Among the tracks we recorded, there are songs I genuinely think are lovely. These are songs that feel open and honest, and soft in a way I seldom allow myself to be these days.

Some of them speak to things that really matter to me. Songs like Leave, which come from a place of personal empowerment. Because that’s the lens I see the world through — empowerment over oppression, inclusion over division, truth over performance.

I believe in people. I believe most of us are trying, in our own way, to come from love.

And I believe being real means we don’t just show the light — we integrate the shadow too.

That’s where my music comes from.

But this is different…

Because one of the songs I’ve recorded… is a love song. (Gasp)

And sharing it feels incredibly vulnerable.

It’s not even because I haven’t been open before — I really have. I’ve shared a lot. (Over shared a lot too!) But this feels like a different kind of exposure. A quieter one. A more intimate one.

No one has heard this song yet. No one.

(Aside from Saul, who helped me bring it to life in the studio.)

But soon, I’ll be releasing it.

It feels tender. It feels real. And it feels like letting people see a side of me that’s been kept just out of reach.

So yes — there’s vulnerability here.

But there’s also something beautiful in that.

I hope, when you hear it, you feel it too.

As per… stay brave, stay powerful, and stay you.

And stay tuned.

3 Years Post Narc Vid Shoot

It’s been three years since I recorded the video for The Narcissist.

At the time, I felt ready. Ready to release it, ready to be seen, ready to stand behind what I’d created. It was the first song I ever recorded, and I thought it would be my first release.

It wasn’t—but that doesn’t change what it is.

That song holds such a massive part of my life. It’s where I started finding my voice. Saying things I hadn’t said before. Learning what it meant to hold accountability.

Becoming the person who could stand behind those words. That was so huge to me.

Going from being virtually silent in myself to a music artist. So transformative.

From holding it all in to having something real, something finished, something I could point to and say, this is mine.

That was three years ago this Easter. Done and ready to go.

And I was too, in my own way.

Quick Update

Things are moving behind the scenes.

I’ve been jamming with some new musicians, getting a feel for different dynamics and seeing what clicks. It’s been good to be back in a room with people and just play. Will be doing more of this too!

I’m also in the studio with Saul working on new material. We’ve been starting everything stripped back—just voice and guitar—letting the songs land before building anything around them. Next week we’ll be getting more tracks down again, so there’ll be a lovely selection to choose from when it comes to releasing.

At the same time, we’ve been organising live dates, and getting things lined up to bring this music out properly.

It feels like things are coming together.

More soon.

In the Studio: Starting Simple

We’ve just come out of studio time — and this one was different.

We recorded eight new tracks.

Just me and a guitar.

There’s no overthinking. No layering. No trying to make them into ‘something’. Just the songs… just as they were written.

That was very intentional.

I chose to start with the simplest songs first. The ones that feel like they can stand on their own without needing anything added.

There’s something honest about that.

But to be honest, something a pretty exposing too. Because there’s nowhere to go in a stripped-back recording. No production to soften the edges. No noise to hide behind.

Just truth.

So songs feel like a foundation. The starting point for stepping forward into what comes next.

Later, we’ll build. Maybe experiment. We’ll take the more complex tracks and let them become whatever they’re meant to be, but for right now — this felt right.

Simple. Direct. Real.

There was also a small moment in the studio that meant more to me than I expected when I got to play a Martin!

That was the guitar I wanted when I first decided to play. (Then I saw the price tag.)

In the end, I chose a Tanglewood — and I love her. Every song I’ve written has come through that guitar. She’s part of the sound and part of the story.

But still… sitting there, playing a Martin in the studio — there was something in that. A quiet full-circle moment. Or maybe just a glimpse of what’s possible…

The tracks we recorded:

  • Hold Me Close
  • If Only
  • Over It
  • Leave
  • Make It Stop
  • My Body: My Choice
  • Bandage Me Up
  • Falling Down

And we’ve started working on We Are Not Angry Enough — which we’re giving some breathing space before continuing with.

This is the beginning of the next chapter.

Feels real. There’s some raw vulnerability in there.

And that’s what I wanted.

Stay brave, stay powerful, and stay you. I’ll endeavour to do the same.

EP Launch & International Women’s Day — Thank You for Being There!

Last Friday was a special night. Releasing new music and celebrating International Women’s Day together felt powerful, emotional, and completely alive with energy.

Watching people show up, listen, connect, and lose themselves in the music is exactly why I do this. These songs have been living inside me for a long time, and hearing them in a room full of people made it feel like they finally found their home.

International Women’s Day felt like the perfect backdrop for the show. Not in a polished, ceremonial way—but in a real, messy, honest, human way. Music has always been about reclaiming power, telling truths, and turning pain into something loud, bold, and unapologetic. That’s exactly what the night felt like.

Huge love to everyone who came, listened, supported, and shared the space. To the bands and artists who played alongside me, and to everyone who helped make the night happen behind the scenes — I see you and I appreciate you.

This is just the beginning. More music is coming, more shows are coming, and I can’t wait to keep building this with you.

Thank you for being part of this journey!
